Better Speech and Hearing Month

Hi and welcome to We Say Play Speech Language Therapy! First a bit about me, my name is Rosemarie (but please call me Rosey) Ott. I am a DIR/Floortime certified speech language pathologist and certified kids yoga teacher serving young children and their families throughout New York City. When I’m not playing with my clients, I spend my time between Brooklyn and New Paltz, NY where you can find me hiking with my fiancé and our two fur-kids, Tinsley and Huckleberry.

I can’t think of a better time to introduce We Say Play to the blogging world than on the eve of Better Speech and Hearing Month! Every year, the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) uses the month of May to bring awareness to the millions of people with communication disorders and the professionals who help them (hint: me!). This year’s theme is Communication For All. I think it’s a safe assumption to say that all communication disorder professionals (speech language pathologists, speech language pathology assistants and audiologists) were driven to this field to carry out that mission. Communication for everyone, from our little guys who can’t yet express the contents of their mind to our grandparents who are working hard to rehabilitate after a stroke.

At We Say Play, our ultimate goal is to help every child we treat to “find their voice”. We treat each child as an individual, begin where they are, facilitate their strengths and bolster their weaknesses so they can begin to communicate in their own way. We empower caregivers and families to become their child’s “best clinician”. Whether it’s helping a Mom find a way to enter her child with Autism’s world or giving a late-talker the support they need to become a regular chatty Cathy. Communication does not occur in a vacuum, and so, neither does our therapy. We work hard to remain cognizant of the whole child and treat holistically, truly bringing communication to all.

Be on the look out for biweekly posts from We Say Play on topics varying from language development, language disorders, yoga and mindfulness in children and my favorite, play!
